The remarkable return of an influential comic series promises an exhilarating fresh era in the realm of graphic storytelling. After five decades, the renowned sci-fi anthology Metal Hurlant is set to make its comeback in 2025, spearheaded by accomplished writer Matt Fraction, alongside a stellar lineup of comic book talents. Originally conceptualized by filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky and legendary artists like Mœbius, Jean-Pierre Dionnet, and Philippe Druillet, this iconic anthology shaped the landscape of comics and significantly impacted a generation of creators and filmmakers, including Denis Villeneuve.
The revived Metal Hurlant will be published by Humanoids as a quarterly anthology, featuring an impressive format of over 272 pages in each issue. Metal Hurlant aims to captivate audiences by taking innovative strides and publishing daring narratives. The Humanoids publisher, Fabrice Giger, stated that while most content will be original, reintroducing archival material like Mœbius's short stories will allow new readers to discover the iconic creators that shaped the medium. The series aspires to blend timeless classics from Metal Hurlant's legacy with insightful cultural discussions and fresh stories from today’s artistic visionaries.
Funding for the series will be accomplished through Kickstarter, where backers can find exciting rewards—including a special hardcover edition of Mœbius's classic tale 'Arzach,' posterzines, and a portfolio of eight prints featuring vintage Metal Hurlant covers. The new Metal Hurlant #1 is set to hit stores in Spring 2025, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of its original launch. It will be available through comic shops, bookstores, and the Kickstarter platform, marking a significant comeback for this seminal series. The landscape of horror comics is equally enriched by many talented artists that have shaped the genre throughout its history.
