Rumors Abound: Beloved Star Ocean Game Could Receive a Remake

Recent developments suggest that a remake of the popular action RPG "Star Ocean: The Second Story" may be on the horizon. A logo for "Star Ocean: The Second Story R" was briefly spotted on the Square Enix Support website before being removed, leading fans to speculate that an official announcement regarding the remake may be forthcoming. This would undoubtedly be welcome news for fans of the franchise, who have long awaited a modernized revival of this beloved title.

The Second Story, released in 1998 for the PlayStation 1, is widely considered one of the best entries in the Star Ocean series. The game allows players to choose between two protagonists, Claude C. Kenny, a member of the space-faring Pangalactic Federation, and Rena Lanford, a young girl with healing powers living on a medieval-like planet. Depending on the chosen protagonist, different characters become available for party recruitment, adding to the game's replayability.

In 2008, a remake called "Star Ocean: Second Evolution" was released for the PSP and later ported to PS4, PS3, and Vita in Japan in 2015. However, the updated version never made its way to Western markets, leaving fans yearning for a modernized release of the classic game. With the recent appearance of the "Second Story R" logo, it appears that this long-awaited remake might finally be on its way.

Should this speculation prove accurate, it's likely that the remake will follow a similar pattern to the 2019 rerelease of the first Star Ocean game, "Star Ocean: First Departure R." This remaster found its way to the Nintendo Switch, so fans can reasonably hope for a Switch release of the second game's remake as well. Although there have been no official announcements, the appearance of the logo suggests that news may be forthcoming from Square Enix.

As of now, fans of the Star Ocean series can only wait and hope that Square Enix will soon confirm the existence of a "Star Ocean: The Second Story" remake. Should this be the case, it would provide a much-desired opportunity to revisit the world of this beloved game and introduce it to a new generation of gamers.
